​The 43rd Annual Silver Symposium Award Winners from left to right are: Amy Schaefer, Kristen DeMeester, Andrea Potocny and Manman Lu

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry hosted the 43rd annual Silver Symposium on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in 219 Brown Laboratory. All of our graduate student participants gave excellent presentations, with four being singled out as Award winners:

1st Place: Kristen DeMeester, “Remodeling of the Peptidoglycan Backbone Reveals Details about Bacterial Cell Wall Structure and Immune Recognition”

(Mentor: Prof. Catherine Grimes)

2nd Place: Manman Lu, “Understanding the Interplay between HIV-1 Capsid and Cyclophilin A Using Magic Angle Spinning NMR”

(Mentor: Prof. Tatyana Polenova)

Tied for 3rd: Amy Schaefer, “Rescuing the Response of the Crohn’s Associated NOD2 Mutants”

(Mentor: Prof. Catherine Grimes)

Andrea Potocny, “Linear Tetrapyrrole Metal Complexes as Efficient Photosensitizers of Singlet Oxygen for Use in Photodynamic Therapy”

(Mentor: Prof. Joel Rosenthal)

A jury composed of representatives of each major research area in the department judged the participants on the basis of both the effectiveness of the presentation and the quality of the research. The Silver award consists of a certificate and an honorarium supported by the Joel Silver Award Fund (given in memory of Joel L. Silver, a graduate student killed in a traffic accident in his last doctoral year [1971]). We wish to thank all the participants and the jurors and heartiest congratulations to the award winners.
