Majors and Minors

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers several degrees in chemistry, biochemistry and chemistry education: 

 ​​A Bachelor of Science degree requires greater depth in disciplinary/technical study and fewer breadth courses than does a Bachelor of Arts degree.  Our B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry are certified by the American Chemical Society, and provide the best preparation for students interested in graduate school, medical school, or research positions in industry or government.  The CHEM degree involves more extensive mathematical training, while the BIOC degree provides a broader exposure to biological systems, with an emphasis on their underlying chemical foundations.  (A degree in biochemistry, in turn, has a more quantitative foundation than a biology degree and focuses primarily on the molecular aspects of biological systems.  Biochemistry, as a subset of chemistry, is a more specialized field  than is biology.)

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry allows for a greater breadth in study with fewer technical courses, and is more appropriate for students who want to combine a general background in chemistry with studies in other areas (e.g., political science, journalism, business, etc.).

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry Education prepares students for teaching chemistry at the high school level. It combines the requirements for a B.A. degree in Chemistry with professional education courses, and is accredited by NCATE  (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education). On completing the program requirements, students receive the University of Delaware's endorsement for teaching certification.

Multiple majors/minors are possible/common with B.S. and B.A. degrees when coupled with careful course planning to meet all requirements.
